The Seward Animal Shelter has 13 kittens ready for adoption, along with several adult cats. The shelter recently took in five pregnant cats and three unneutered males from the same home. Some of the cats were only six months old.

Shelter worker Shelli McDowell said that at first she thought only two of the cats were pregnant, but a visiting vet confirmed all five were expecting, just on different schedules. One of the mother cats lost her entire litter, but she is now helping care for the other kittens. McDowell said it’s heartwarming to see her step in when the biological mothers need a break.
Adopting a cat can offer real benefits beyond companionship. According to the MEOW Foundation, having cats around can lower stress and anxiety, reduce cortisol levels, and help people feel less lonely. The simple act of petting a cat can trigger a relaxation response and release “cuddle chemicals” like oxytocin, which boost mood and well-being. Cats bring a calming presence and unconditional love, and caring for them can give people a greater sense of purpose (source).
Five kittens — three males and two females — will be ready for adoption by the end of the week. They are eating and drinking on their own and just need vaccinations. The remaining eight kittens are still too young to have their sex identified.
All of the mother cats are friendly and affectionate. The shelter’s priority is to find homes for all the kittens and adult cats as soon as possible.
