October 11, 2026 Seward Folly
by Kat Sorenson
There’s been plenty to celebrate around the City lately, so let’s start with the good
news.
Our electric team had a big week. The City of Seward received the Alaska Power
Association’s Commitment to Continuous Safety Improvement Award, and Taylor
Crocker and Dave Foote accepted on behalf of their teams. We’re grateful for the
dedication these crews bring every day to doing their work professionally and safely.
On top of that, our General Manager, Brian Hickey, received the Mason LaZelle
Achievement Award, the highest honor the APA bestows, recognizing nearly four
decades of helping shape Alaska’s electric utility industry. Congratulations, Brian and
team!
We also held an Electric Department town hall and shared preliminary results from
our customer survey. We’re keeping the survey open a bit longer so more voices can
be heard. You can see the results so far, and how they compare to the survey we did
about a year ago, at the link below.
I’m pleased to celebrate Chief Kate McCoy, our newly promoted Seward Fire Chief.
Chief McCoy has served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2020, responding to and
commanding a multitude of emergency scenes, and in 2024 she received the Ken
Akerley Fire Service Leadership Award. If you see her around town, please be sure to
congratulate her!
Behind the scenes, our Deputy City Manager has been helping departments put
together RFPs, use agreements, and contracts, and is working with the city attorney
on standardized forms to make that process more efficient. We’ve also been working
through the Department of Energy’s official close out audit of the Heat Loop Grant,
which has required a significant amount of documentation and reporting.
There’s a lot of good work happening across the City, and I’m grateful to share it with
you. Until next time!
