Forest Service, Chugachmiut firefighters responding

(Anchorage, AK, Sep. 14, 2026) — At 10 a.m today, Chugach National Forest firefighters responded to a plume of smoke spotted from mile marker 74 on the Seward Highway.

The source of smoke is a wildfire, dubbed the Seattle Fire, that has burned an estimated 1/3 of an acre with fire behavior increasing.

Chugach NF firefighters, along with firefighters from the Chugachmiut crew, are on scene and constructing a fire line. The wildfire is in a remote location that is difficult to access, especially with water.

The firefighters will continue to construct a fire line into the evening and will return early in the morning. A helicopter from the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection and additional resources are on order to assist in suppression efforts and expected to arrive tomorrow.
