From the City Manager…. We’re squeezing every last drop out of summer here in Seward, and I’m grateful for it. The sunshine won’t stick around much longer, so between meetings I’ve been trying to get outside and enjoy it while I can, and I hope you have too.

It’s been a big week of meetings on my end, prepping for our September 14 Council
meeting. There’s a good mix on the agenda this time. Council will hold a public
hearing on a new lease with He Will Provide, Inc. for space in the lower level of the
Senior Center, and we’ll introduce an ordinance updating the residency requirement
for two seats on our Historic Preservation Commission, which should make it easier
to fill those seats with folks who care about Seward’s history. We’re also excited to
bring forward two grant resolutions, including funding for the Seward Museum’s
WWII Exhibit Project, and we’ll hear presentations from KPEDD’s Cassidi Cameron
and from our visiting Obihiro students.
Outside of meeting prep, I got to spend some time on the water with Mayor McClure, Vice Mayor Osenga, Finance Director Jusino, and Police Chief Tiner for something pretty special: welcoming the ARM Cuauhtémoc back to Resurrection Bay.
This Mexican Navy tall ship pulled up to the Freight Dock Saturday morning with
over 200 sailors, officers, and cadets aboard, kicking off a four-day visit. It’s only the
third time this ship has called on Seward, with earlier stops back in 2005 and 2014,
and every time it’s a reminder of how a small town like ours can leave a real
impression on visitors who’ve sailed in from all over the world. One of the folks
involved in that very first 2005 visit told me the crew still talks about how
welcomed they felt here, and honestly, that’s Seward in a nutshell. We show up for
people. A huge thank you to everyone who showed up to welcome them in town!
