Seward Softball League wrapped up its season this week. Seward Insurance is the 2026 champion team. The co-ed softball league championship came down to a close contest between Seward Insurance and Major Marine. The league, which initially considered splitting into two divisions, ended up combining all teams into one. Teams play five men and five women.

Seward Insurance has some history, with some of them playing together for more than ten years. They relied on their experience and local roots to secure a narrow victory. Most of the players grew up in the area. Team members included Erick Amberg, Blake Pullins, Ryan Gardner, Jack Gardner, Reed Lane, Jake Boulden, Stephanie Wright, Natalie Fox, Jamie Fredrickson, Carrie Boulden, Paige Watson, and Diane Gentry.

The game was decided in the final innings. Seward Insurance took the lead in the sixth, going up by one run. Major Marine tied it in the seventh, forcing Amberg’s team to bat again. They held Major Marine scoreless to win the title. The game was played on the larger field, with no home runs and an emphasis on small ball.

Amberg credited the team’s cohesion and experience.

Stephanie Wright noted that the kayak guide team made notable improvement: “We beat them bad the first game, but by the the end of the season, they beat us, they got their act together.” Unfortunately, they had to forfeit their playoff game.

Wright also noted that if they had one more competitive team, they could have a Tuesday night league, which would help make the teams more evenly matched.

Seward Parks and Recreation, led by Russ White, were very supportive.

Major Marine’s fans were noted for their energy and turnout. The final margin was one run, with Seward Insurance fighting off Major Marine Tours in a narrow 7-to-6 victory.
