We are heartbroken by the whale strike involving one of our vessels. The loss of any whale is deeply saddening, and we recognize the profound impact this incident has on the Seward community, conservation advocates, our guests, and all those who care deeply about Alaska’s marine environment. We take this matter incredibly seriously.
Protecting marine life is a responsibility we share with the communities we visit. Our shipboard officers undergo specialized whale awareness and detection training on a regular basis, and officers operating in Alaska receive additional training focused on the unique marine environment of the region. We also maintain specific bridge protocols designed to help identify and avoid whales and other marine mammals whenever possible. In addition, our longstanding partnership with a leading conservation organization includes a Marine Mammal Management Plan focused on reducing ship-related impacts on whales and other marine species.
We have launched a thorough internal investigation and are working with NOAA Fisheries and other relevant authorities as they conduct their review. Additionally, we are evaluating other ways to partner with NOAA Fisheries to reduce the risk of future incidents. We remain committed to understanding exactly what occurred, identifying any lessons that can be learned, and evaluating additional measures, technologies, and partnerships to assist with proactive risk management.
We know the public and the conservation community expect transparency and accountability. We share those expectations. Once our review is complete, we will share timely updates on any actions we take.
Above all, our hearts are with the Seward community, whose connection to Alaska’s wildlife and natural environment is both deeply rooted and deeply respected. We share the community’s concern over this loss and remain committed to working alongside local stakeholders, scientists, and conservation organizations to help protect whales and the marine ecosystems that make this region so extraordinary.”
