Soccer, a sport beloved by the world for centuries, is making its big swing back into Seward High with both boys and girls teams. Last year, soccer was more of a club than an actual sport because it was still coed due to the lack of interest, but this year things have changed.

Before 2025, we didn’t offer soccer as a sport at Seward High at all for quite some time due to the strong interest in track and field. Students have had such an amazing and fun-filled season this year, and Lia Shank, a junior on the team, says, “I am so glad to finally not be coed and be able to pursue soccer as a real sport.” The students had such a good time building up their skills and being able to still play soccer after middle school.

Of boys’ coach Joel Williams: “We couldn’t have made it through this season without his hard work, he’s the GOAT.” – Sampson Antrim

This soccer season would not have been possible without the extraordinary work of its coaches. Joel Williams, who is also my math teacher, DDF coach, and student council supervisor, did a wonderful job coaching the boys’ team. I asked senior player and longtime soccer lover Sampson Antrim what he thought about Williams’ coaching this season. His answer was: “We couldn’t have made it through this season without his hard work; he’s the GOAT.” Talking to a lot of the boys on the team, his hard work is clear, and you can see that through the way these boys play. Sampson and his brother Milo have been enjoying soccer since they were very young, so they were excited to play a full schedule their senior year.

Of girls’ coach Myla Satterlund: “Myla is our team’s rock. Without her, we wouldn’t be able to work so well together.” – Mikinley Williams

The girls soccer team has an equally incredible and kind coach, Myla Satterlund. I have known her since I was 11, and she truly is one of the kindest people I have ever met, constantly going out of her way to make others feel better. Her coaching this season has been the perfect blend of both compassion and determination. The girls truly loved having her as a coach, and as I was talking with a few of them, senior goalie Mikinley Williams had this to say: “Myla is our team’s rock. Without her, we wouldn’t be able to work so well together.” It’s clear that Satterlund is truly putting her all into not only coaching but also being a longtime helper in the Seward community.

Overall, the team has had a really great season, with hard work being put in from each and every one of the players and coordinators. As their season comes to an end, it is going to be hard to see the team’s seniors leave: Mikinley Williams, Kaylynn Reed, Milo Antrim, Sampson Antrim and Alejandro Sanchez.

Hopefully, their next season will be just as, if not more, successful than this season, with a boys’ record of 7–7 and a girls’ record of 3-8-1. The first time the girls played Homer, they lost by a large margin,  but the next time they played, they tied. It definitely showed the improvement made this season, especially since they have a very young team. Most of the home games were pouring rain, but the players agreed it was still fun playing on the new field.  

The community really enjoyed seeing a sport that has not been played at Seward High in seven years being played with such excitement and enthusiasm. I have never seen a group of people so happy to play a sport, and I am so proud of these athletes for persevering through challenges and having a good time.
