The Seward Farmer’s Market is back for the season, and this year, organizers are spotlighting a different “Green of the Week” at each Saturday event. With cold weather making it too early for most local gardens to get started, featuring kelp as the first green made sense for both growers and shoppers.
“While the soil is still waking up, we featured kelp as the ‘Green of the Week,’” said event organizer and master gardener Ryan Wanamaker. The kelp was grown at CRRC’s commercial site at Passage Island through a partnership with the Fjordland Greens Growing Project. Market-goers found pickled kelp, seaweed salad, and even a seaweed-based biostimulant “perfect for rousing your soils from their winter dormancy,” Ryan added.
Kelp won’t be returning this Saturday, but the next “Green of the Week” will be devil’s club shoots, an Alaskan wild edible that can be fried or used like fiddleheads.
Shoppers can also expect a wide variety of local goods: laser wood works, earrings, ornaments, 3D printed crafts, dog treats, candles, handmade kitchen and home items, freeze dried and baked goods, used books, vintage clothing, art prints, yeast doughnuts, peonies, craft projects, artisan baked goods, beaded jewelry, cottage goods, fry bread, bagels, gluten-free pastries, focaccia, sourdough starters, frozen pizza dough, smoked salmon, homemade art and pottery, herbal tinctures, creams, salves, soaps, room sprays, quilts, bags, sourdough crackers and cookies, honey, duck eggs, herb starts, bath and body products, and traditional Alaskan Native arts and crafts.
The “Green of the Week” program gives market visitors a chance to try something new while supporting local growers and artisans. As the season progresses and more produce comes into season, the market will continue to offer both familiar favorites and unexpected finds, keeping Saturdays in Seward fresh and interesting. Cloth bags made by volunteers from unused Seward event t-shirts will also be available for shoppers.
