The Seward Seahawks hosted the first track and field meet on their new synthetic track this past weekend, marking the first home event since 2020. Cool, overcast weather set the backdrop as teams from Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, and Cook Inlet joined Seward, along with middle schools including Skyview, CI Middle School, and Kenai Middle School.
This Borough meet closed out the middle school season and served as the final opportunity for high school athletes to qualify for Regions. Qualification is based on performance times, with the top 16 athletes in each event earning a spot at Regions.
Cold, rainy weather has made the season challenging across Alaska. Just last week, a meet in Soldotna was cancelled due to snow. Athletes have adapted by bringing down coats and heavy sweats to every meet, removing them seconds before the start of each race.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams showed strong performances. The boys ran the 4×200 relay for the first time, and despite a few shaky handoffs, the team was enthusiastic about the new event. Olive Jordan ran the 1600m for the first time this season, making a push from behind to nearly take first in a close and exciting finish.

Several athletes posted notable results. Regan Seibert broke the school record in the long jump, hitting 16 feet 2 inches, and also improved her school record in the 100m. Olin Liljemark set a personal record in the high jump, clearing 6’4″. Grace Fleming finished second in her event and tied the school record in the high jump at 5 feet.
With the meet running smoothly, many Seahawks are on track to compete at Regions. Final rosters will be confirmed on Thursday, but those currently ranked in the top 16 in their events are set to advance.
State Championship qualification for Division II will go to the top finisher from Regions 2, 3, 5, and 6, plus the next 12 best marks statewide. Relay teams will qualify in a similar manner, with the top team from each region and the next four fastest statewide advancing to State.
For high jump, all at-large qualifiers must clear the State Championship starting height at Regions. Boys’ Division II high jump will start at 5’4” with two-inch increments to 6 feet, then one-inch increments. Girls’ Division II will start at 4’4” with two-inch increments to 5 feet, then one-inch increments.
The Seahawks are looking to send as many athletes as possible to Regions, where State qualifiers will be determined.
