April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month and the Seward Folly wanted to do something special to celebrate our incredible volunteer community here in Seward. Throughout the month, we’ll be publishing Volunteer Spotlights that recognize Sewardites who embody the spirit of service. Each spotlight will feature one local resident’s responses to a set of questions about their passion for volunteering, favorite moments, and advice for those interested in getting involved.
Volunteer Spotlight #3
We invited the Seward Fire Department to select a volunteer that they’d like to be featured in our monthly volunteer appreciation series. They chose Cristian Auberry, who was voted as their Firefighter of the Year for 2025. What follows are Cristian’s and the department’s responses and insights about the impact that he has made in a very short period of time.

What is your name?
Cristian Auberry
Please tell us a bit about Cristian’s history with your organization.
Cristian has been with the Seward Fire Department now for a year. He was voted as our Firefighter of the Year for 2025. Here are a few things our volunteers had to say regarding this nomination:
Cristian has come in and has run a ton of calls (he has been the best on after-hour calls). He has been coming to trainings and classes like he has been here forever. Great sense of humor and doesn’t shy away from anything. Great addition to the department and to the fire service.
Cristian is a quiet constant at the station. He does not hesitate to jump in and try new things. If he is late to a call and misses the first truck he will either take a squad or stand by at the station. He has put in extra effort in everything he does.
Cristian joined the department less then a year ago and has easily been one of the most consistent, dependable responders since he has joined. He is a fast learner, is always willing to help & is very respectful to everyone he comes into contact with.
He has made a strong impact in only a short time. Always eager to help, never shirking the dull or tedious tasks. Most importantly, HE SHOWS UP.
Cristian has been motivated, competent and consistently friendly. His passion for helping others is an inspiration!
He has consistently demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment as a volunteer.
He is reliable and always stepping up when needed. Whether it’s in the middle of the night or during the day. He always has a positive attitude and never complains. He is a great role model for all volunteers.
He is always responding to calls whenever available and is always up for learning new skills.
