The Seward Seahawk boys’ basketball team wrapped up their season this weekend at the Division 2 Southern Region Playoffs, hosted by Ninilchik and played at Homer High School. The tournament brought together five teams: Su-Valley, Unalaska, Lumen Christi, Ninilchik, and Seward.

Seward opened against Su-Valley on Thursday evening, falling 47-57 and moving into the consolation bracket. The Seahawks bounced back with a decisive 43-24 win over Unalaska, then faced Lumen Christi in a tense, back-and-forth contest. The game came down to the final seconds, with a State Championship berth on the line.

“It was a great game. It came down to the last second,” Coach Plan said. “We led the whole game with an 8-point lead at the end of the first quarter. We only led by 4 at half-time, but stretched it out to 8 points in the third quarter before Lumen charged back with four 3-point shots in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to one point. We led by six points with 1:35 left (in the game) when they hit a 3-pointer and fouled, and hit the FT to cut the lead to two. We scored a lay-up, and they hit a 3-point down the stretch and in the last minute. Emerson Cross led with 13 points and 7 assists, Mason Elhard had 12 points, and Lane Petersen had 10 points and 12 rebounds.”

Seward edged Lumen Christi 54-53, keeping their postseason hopes alive.

On Friday, Seward met Su-Valley again for a shot at State. Su-Valley took an early lead, but Seward kept pushing, closing the gap to two points in the final quarter. Su-Valley’s defense forced key turnovers, and they pulled away to win 51-45.

The loss was tough for Seward, who had battled back through the consolation bracket. Players and parents showed their disappointment, but the team left with heads up, knowing they gave everything.

After the game, Coach Plan reflected, “The whole is not represented by one game. And so we’re going to try to take it all in. As we get a chance to reflect, I’m sure we’ll appreciate the effort, the time, and the hard work these guys have committed for four months now. It’s been a great season. These guys were a joy to coach. They worked really hard to get better, and you could see the improvement as the season went on, with ups and downs. But ultimately, I’m proud of the way they played. They have a reason to hold their heads high. They should be able to look back on the season with good memories.”

The Seahawks may have fallen short of a State appearance, but their determination and resilience defined their season. The team’s fight through the bracket showed their growth and character, leaving plenty for Seward to be proud of as they look ahead to next year.
