Seward High’s basketball teams have been on a tough stretch of away games since mid-February. From February 12 to 14, both the girls’ and boys’ teams competed in Valdez at the Elks Tournament. The next week, they were in Su-Valley for a divisional matchup. Last weekend, they hit the road again, taking on Nikiski, Homer, and Ninilchik. Now, both teams are set to head back to Homer for the Region Playoffs, hoping for a shot at the State Championship in Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center, March 11 to 14.
To advance to State, the Seahawks need to be one of the top two teams in the Southern Division 2 regional playoffs. This weekend in Homer, Seward will compete for those spots, along with Unalaska, Su-Valley, Lumen Christi, and Ninilchik. The tournament is being hosted by Ninilchik but will be held in Homer High’s gym, since Ninilchik’s facility is too small.

On the boys’ side, Ninilchik leads Division 2 with a 16-3-0 record, while Seward holds the 11th spot at 12-11-0 as of March 1. For the girls, Tok is ranked first in Division 2, but not in the Southern Division. Seward’s girls are ranked second overall and first in their division, with a 24-0-0 record heading into the playoffs.
Coach Curtis Berry shared his recap of the girls’ recent road games. At the Valdez Elks Tournament, Seward opened against Monroe Catholic, pulling off a 46-40 comeback win. They beat Nome-Beltz 48-19 in the semifinals. In the championship, Seward trailed Cordova at half but dominated the third period, holding Cordova scoreless and going on a 20-2 run. The final was 36-29, marking Seward’s first tournament win in years. Mikinley Williams, Grace Fleming, and MVP Ava Jagielski were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Jagielski also recognized as Defensive Player of the Tournament.
On February 20 at Su-Valley, both Seward JV and varsity girls won. Varsity standouts included Mikinley Williams with 18 points and Ava Jagielski with 22 points and 16 rebounds, leading to a 63-22 win. After a stay in Talkeetna, the varsity girls made it 48 straight wins with a victory at Lumen Christi — Grace Fleming scored 22, Sevin Phillips 14, and Lia Shank 13.
The regular season wrapped up last week with games at Homer and Nikiski. The Seward boys lost to Homer 84-73 but beat Nikiski 66-51. The girls handled both opponents, defeating Nikiski 78-32 and Homer 63-13.
The focus now turns to the regional playoffs this weekend in Homer, where the Seahawks will look to secure their place at State.
