The Seward Seahawk girls basketball team opened its season with a tournament sweep and a commanding win at home, setting a clear tone for the months ahead.

On December 18-20, the Seahawks traveled to Kenai High School for the Craig Jung Basketball Tournament, joining 13 other teams from around Alaska. The field included teams from Kenai Central, Soldotna, Ninilchik, Minto, Chugiak, Houston, North Pole, and Northway. Seward, competing as a 2A school, played against Houston (3A), Minto (1A), and Chugiak (4A) over three days. The team came away with victories in each matchup, including a tight game against 4A Chugiak.

The tournament was a key event for Alaska high school basketball, with nonstop games and strong competition. Three Seward players, Mikinley Williams, Grace Fleming, and Ava Jagielski, were named to the all-tournament team. The Seahawks finished as tournament champions and remain the defending 2A State Champions.

The Seahawks returned to home court last weekend to play Lumen Christi, a 2A Catholic high school from Anchorage. Seward controlled the game from the start, finishing with a 60-2 victory. Players and coaches focused on maintaining good sportsmanship and keeping the game positive.

“No one likes to play in a blowout game; both the losing team and the winners. Our goal was to be ourselves and play our own game. The girls did a great job with fun and a good attitude, which can be hard in a blowout situation. It’s best to not look at the scoreboard and focus on game execution,” said Coach Curtis Berry.

The Seahawks now begin a seven-game home series. Their next matchup is against Redington High School, another 2A team from the Wasilla area, set for Friday, January 9, at 3:00 p.m.
