The Seward Seahawks nine-man football squad made the most of a perfect Saturday afternoon, dominating Valdez 68-8 in a nonconference game that ended at halftime. The lopsided victory on their home field pushed Seward’s record to a spotless 3-0 this season.
Quarterback Emerson Cross fired touchdown passes to Lane Petersen and Micah Brueckner in the opening quarter. Cross and Cam Schrock added rushing scores, and Cai Turner found the end zone twice on the ground. With the game well in hand, head coach Tyler Mallory pulled his starting players.
“It was great to get our new guys some time in a varsity football game. They all work hard every day at practice, and on Saturday got to see what that hard work leads to. Great win for the whole team.”

The Cross family’s football reputation kept growing as Chiron Cross tacked on two rushing touchdowns and hauled in another through the air in the second quarter, helping Seward put things out of reach early.
But the Seahawks now face a very different challenge with another grueling 500-mile drive north for this weekend’s Denali Conference clash against the Student Wrestling Development Program (SWDP) in Fairbanks. The newly formed SWDP squad is no ordinary opponent. As an independent private school for grades 4 through 12, SWDP was designed to cater to serious young athletes, with mandatory morning PE sessions and a school culture built around sports.
Coach Mallory knows the long road trip and the caliber of competition mean his team will have to raise their game.
“They are pretty good, and every team we play is going to give us their best shot,” Mallory said. “Our job is to focus on us, and play to our level, so that’s what we are gonna do this weekend.”

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Fairbanks. If the Seahawks can overcome the 500-mile haul and a sports academy hungry for a statement win, it’ll be a true test of their season momentum.
