The Seward Seahawks didn’t just win their game against Monroe Catholic this Saturday, they practically crossed half of Alaska to do it.
After piling onto a bus for a sprawling 1,000-mile round trip, the Seahawks rolled into Fairbanks and rolled over the Rams, notching a 46-8 win under sunny skies and fair temperatures. The trip was no small feat: the team spent nearly 20 hours on the road, crashed on the Monroe Catholic gym floor, and squeezed in a team dinner at a BBQ joint before heading back south. With all that time together, the Seahawks had plenty of chances to bond.
Unfortunately, the cheer squad couldn’t make the journey up north, sidelined by a scheduling conflict.
Coach Tyler Mallory’s squad moves to 2-0 on the season after Saturday’s win, while Monroe Catholic drops to 1-1. Standout Emerson Cross put together a highlight reel performance, tossing two touchdown passes, running in another, and taking a punt all the way to the house. Hayden Campbell and Lane Petersen each caught touchdown passes, while Cai Turner powered in for a score on the ground. On defense, Micah Brueckner and Lane Petersen made play after play, shutting down the Rams’ attack.

The Seahawks’ travels aren’t over yet. In just two weeks, they’re headed back to Fairbanks, but this time to face the Student Wrestling Development Program on September 6. With back-to-back long hauls on the schedule, there’s talk of flying the team rather than enduring another 20-hour marathon on the highway.
And the grind continues: after a weekend off, the Seahawks are set for another epic trip, this time down the Alaskan highway to Valdez, which is a seven-hour trek from Seward. For these road warriors, the journey might be as tough as the competition – but not quite.
