2025 Seward Silver Salmon Derby Recap
The 70th Seward Silver Salmon Derby wrapped up last Sunday, with Seward’s own Tracy Squires reeling in the heaviest fish of the event — a 15.26-pound silver salmon she landed on day two. Anchorage anglers Joseph Lind and Eric Johnson claimed second and third place with 15.12- and 14.50-pound catches, respectively.

Seward was well represented in the top ten, with Savanna Wilkerson placing eighth (14.20 lbs) and Whitney Shaw taking ninth (13.26 lbs).
A total of 1,242 anglers registered for this year’s derby, bringing in 1,921 fish for a combined weight of 14,206 pounds.
Squires, a lifelong Seward resident who’s fished the derby for about 30 years, caught her prize fish trolling with bait in the bay. She credits family tradition for her passion: “This is how we have family time. We have great time with friends and family, and it’s a bonus to win the derby prize!”
She plans to use her prize money to outfit her new house and celebrate with those who shared the winning day on the water.
Squires also noted the special significance of winning in a year honoring the late Dorothy Urbach, a legendary supporter and participant in the derby.
