ABOUT THE SEWARD SILVER SALMON DERBY:
The Seward Silver Salmon Derby is held every year in Seward, always beginning on the second
Saturday in August. The Derby is seventy years old this year and is the oldest fishing competition of its kind in Alaska; often drawing in thousands of anglers from all over the country. The Silver Salmon Derby now features a Pro-Fishing Category, proudly sponsored by Alaska’s own Shoreside Petroleum Local charter captains can compete for a $500 grand prize and a traveling trophy, while their charter clients receive free derby entry on the days they fish and are eligible to win $500 for the heaviest silver salmon in the pro category—plus all standard derby prizes including free Royal Caribbean cruise tickets!

The salmon have been running in Resurrection Bay since mid-June this summer and the Bay is expected to be abundant with silvers this year during Derby week. Anglers are gearing up for what could be one of the most thrilling runs in recent years, promising fast action and full coolers throughout the week. The Derby also has a fish buy back program where funds go back into fish restoration efforts within Resurrection Bay.

The Seward Chamber of Commerce & CVB is honored to announce that this year’s Seward Silver Salmon Derby will be dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Urbach, a beloved member of the Seward community as well as a passionate advocate for both Seward and the Derby. Dorothy passed away earlier this year. This dedication serves as a tribute to Dorothy’s legacy. She was the Derby publicity chairman for thirty years and a major contributor to the Derby for decades, including the weigh-in booth. Dorothy won the Derby in 1979 turning in a 16.11 Coho! The SSSD provides an opportunity for anglers, friends, family and supporters to come together, celebrate the life of Dorothy Urbach and enjoy some quality time on the water.
Dorothy’s daughter Robyn says “Wherever she went Dorothy shared wonderful Seward stories with those she met, a proud ambassador. We hope this event will keep Dorothy’s passion for fishing alive
and inspire others.”
