A 48-year-old Seward resident was arrested Saturday after police say first stole a motorcycle and later a Jeep, then crashed both vehicles along the Seward Highway in a chaotic series of events that sent multiple people to the hospital.

Alaska State Troopers identified the suspect as Rondy Dupuy. Dupuy faces a long list of charges, including two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of second-degree theft, first-degree vehicle theft, driving while license revoked, driving without a motorcycle license, driving under the influence, and second-degree criminal trespass.

According to an affidavit filed with charging documents, the incident began around 8 p.m. Saturday, when troopers responded to reports of a motorcycle swerving at just 5-10 miles per hour, its rider not wearing a helmet. The motorcycle was spotted traveling northbound between Bear Creek and Moose Pass, heading toward Anchorage.

Troopers received a call shortly after this from a man who had stopped after encountering a motorcycle crash and an injured man. The caller, who owned a Jeep, told officers the injured man had stolen his Jeep and driven off with it. While officers were on scene, another man arrived and reported that his motorcycle, found crashed at the scene, had been stolen from his Seward home.

Shortly before 9 p.m., troopers came upon a two-vehicle collision just north of the Sterling and Seward Highway junction near Summit Lake. The stolen Jeep was one of the vehicles involved. Dupuy, who officers say had driven both the stolen motorcycle and the Jeep, was taken to a hospital in Soldotna for treatment. The two occupants of the other vehicle, a BMW, were also hospitalized: one was taken to Seward and the other flown by helicopter to Anchorage.

When contacted at the crash scene, Dupuy allegedly had a large amount of cash in his pocket. According to the affidavit, he told officers he had made the money selling fentanyl in Anchorage the previous day and admitted to stealing both the Jeep and the motorcycle.

After being discharged from the hospital, Dupuy was transported to Wildwood Pretrial Facility. He was arraigned Monday, with bail set at a $20,000 appearance bond and a $10,000 performance bond. If released, he will be required to have a third-party custodian.

No defense attorney had been listed for Dupuy as of Tuesday evening, though he told the court he planned to retain private counsel. Dupuy’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 5 at 2 p.m. in Seward.
