Seward Parks and Recreation Department (SPRD) has stepped up to the plate to manage the city’s softball league.

SPRD Manager Russ White said the department has rebounded from COVID-related challenges and is ready to oversee field maintenance and league operations this summer. The league will utilize two facilities: the Borough-owned Jon Perry field and the City-owned Ryan Lewis field.

“Seward softball is a fun, good-natured, healthy, competitive getaway,” White said, highlighting the program’s role in community recreation.

This season introduces a two-tier structure, offering both recreational and competitive divisions. The competitive D-level league and recreational E-level league will follow co-ed rules, requiring an equal mix of male and female players on the field. Teams need a minimum roster of 12 players, with 10 active players during games, including the short-field position.

Games will be compact and fast-paced, lasting either six innings or one hour, whichever comes first. The season runs from late May through July, with each team playing 14 games. White aims to field eight teams per division but confirmed the leagues will operate with as few as four teams each.

In a move to promote inclusivity, SPRD will continue its popular community team initiative in both divisions.

“Last year, people really enjoyed the community teams,” White explained. “Players made new friends and found ways to get involved.” Interested individuals can join these open-roster teams through online registration or by phone.

Team registration costs $250, while individual players can join for $40. These fees cover referee services and equipment expenses. White looks forward to welcoming back regular participants, including teams from Seward City Church and Major Marine, along with the city’s seasonal workers, who add to the league’s dynamic atmosphere.
