Seward Saunas applied for a 5-year Land Use Permit from the State of Alaska to place two mobile sauna units near the Resurrection River, approximately 2 miles west of the Seward Highway, off of Herman Leirer Road. The public is invited to comment on this activity before the Department of Natural Resources makes a decision.
Seward Saunas has been operating in the location for multiple seasons, but without a permit they were limited to 8 days before they towed the saunas offsite for 3 days, before coming back for another 8 days throughout the season.
The area has seen an uptick in use over the last several years, with campers spread out on the large gravel bar area. Asked about that use, Tim Ozerkov explained that for the most part, they’ve seen responsible campers. Their operation involves meeting clients, who often are staying in town, but come out for a sauna, to instruct them on the use of the portable facility and go through safety measures.
“There’s a packet of rules, including not being allowed to use alcohol or drugs,” explained Ozerkov.
After finishing up, the firm sanitizes the unit in preparation for the next clients. They have a “leave no trace” policy, and often pick up trash from surrounding camps if they see it.
Ozerkov explains that clients “want to experience the saunas for relaxation, health, and be in the natural setting.” He said that clients are respectful of the business and the area.
Heather Heiken, from the Department of Natural Resources, explained that their department regularly visits the gravel bar, including talking to campers and cleaning trash. Their focus is on commercial recreation and tourism, and it is not designated as a conservation area. Heiken didn’t know whether the department planned on providing restrooms in the vicinity.
“Permits are required to host an event, and if the area is used commercially past the 8-day limit,” Heiken emphasized.
