HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST WEEK
Did you know you can check to see how recently snow plows have been on your roads without going outside? The Alaska DOT&PF Winter Operations site shows where plows are in real time and where they’ve been over the last 30 hours. Links to available webcams are on the site, as well as on Alaska 511, which provides information on road construction and other travel advisories.

The Seward Senior Center brought people together for its annual Winter Picnic last Thursday at the Alaska SeaLife Center. This tradition goes back twelve years, starting when locals could visit the SeaLife Center on Freezin’ Free Wednesdays. These days, the Center keeps its doors open to seniors for walking hours every Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. The Winter Picnic has become a January highlight, reminding everyone how much a simple picnic can mean. This year’s event included several door prizes, with the top prize a year-long membership to the SeaLife Center. As Dana Paperman, Director of the Seward Senior Center, puts it: “Everybody loves a picnic.”
